A tradition sealed in history: the Campo Santo

In the 12th century, Archbishop Ubaldo Lanfranchi of Pisa brought back an entire shipload of holy earth from Jerusalem, so that his faithful could be buried in the soil of the Holy Land — the famed Camposanto, the “Holy Field,” was built around it. And in the heart of the Vatican, the soil of the Campo Santo Teutonico cemetery has been held since the fifteenth century to be sacred earth from Jerusalem.
